When the freezer quits
- Chest freezer silent in the garage
- Upright freezer frosted solid inside
- Ice cream soft, meat still hard
Quick answer
Chest and upright freezers usually fail at the start relay, the thermostat, a condenser fan, or the defrost system on frost-free uprights. Around Farmington, typical freezer repairs run about $142-$378, while a sealed system leak can reach four figures. Somebody answers our line 24/7, and a full freezer that has quit gets a tech at any hour.

Why a freezer full of meat can't wait until Monday
Around here, a freezer is rarely just for ice cream. It holds a hunting season's worth of elk or deer, a half beef from a local rancher, green chile roasted in the fall and bread for the month. When that freezer stops, the dollar loss climbs by the hour, which is why we treat a full freezer that has quit as a real emergency and send a tech at any hour.
Chest freezers are simple machines: a compressor, a condenser, cold plates in the walls and a mechanical thermostat. Upright freezers often add a frost-free system with an evaporator fan, a defrost heater and a timer or board. That difference matters, because an upright that is frosted inside has a different problem from a chest freezer that has gone silent.
Before you call, look at the back or bottom of the unit and find the model sticker. Tell us whether the freezer hums, clicks, or makes no sound at all, and whether the outside walls feel warm. Those few details help us bring the right relay, thermostat or fan the first time out, which is what you want when the meat is thawing.

Freezer warning signs, from urgent to just annoying
Check these before you start moving packages into coolers.
Completely silent, light off
No sound and no light usually means power. Check the outlet with a lamp and look at the breaker and any GFCI outlet in the garage. If power is fine, the thermostat or a wiring connection is next.
Hums but won't freeze
If the compressor runs but the inside slowly warms, we look at the condenser fan, dirty coils, and on an upright, the evaporator fan and defrost system. A sealed system leak is possible but less common.
Clicks on and off quickly
A clicking sound every minute or two is the compressor overload tripping. Weak start relays and low voltage on long garage circuits both cause this, and both are fixable.
Thick frost on an upright
Frost-free uprights should never grow heavy ice on the back wall. When they do, the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control has failed and the evaporator is choking.
Ice on chest freezer lid edge
Frost building along one side of the lid means warm, moist air is sneaking in. A torn or flattened lid gasket, or a bent hinge that won't let the lid sit flat, is usually to blame.
Ice cream soft, meat hard
Ice cream softens around 10 degrees while meat still feels solid. That is your early warning: the freezer is losing ground, and the thermostat or fan is worth checking now.
Garage freezers in the Four Corners face two hard seasons
Most chest freezers around here live in a garage, a shop or a barn, not the kitchen. In July those spaces can run far hotter than the 90-degree afternoons outside. The compressor runs nearly nonstop, the condenser can't shed heat fast enough, and weak relays and fans tend to fail in the same few weeks. A clean coil and some open space around the freezer make a real difference.
Winter brings the opposite problem. January lows in the teens can leave an unheated garage colder than the freezer's own setting. Many freezers are not built for that: the thermostat reads cold and stops calling for the compressor, and on combination units the freezer side can actually warm up. Check the manual for the minimum room temperature, and if your garage drops below it, the freezer needs a warmer spot or a garage-rated model.
Out on rural acreage near Kirtland, Flora Vista and La Plata, freezers often sit at the end of a long extension cord or an old shop circuit. Low voltage makes a compressor strain at every start. Before replacing a relay, our tech checks the outlet under load, because a new part on a weak circuit will just fail again.
From a thawing freezer to cold again
- First call
Triage on the phone
We ask how full it is, how long it has been off, and what it sounds like. A full freezer that has stopped gets the earliest tech we can send, any hour.
- Before we arrive
Protect the food
Keep the lid closed. A full chest freezer holds food safely for about 48 hours if it stays shut, so don't open it to check on things.
- At the freezer
Check power under load
Our tech tests the outlet voltage while the compressor tries to start, then checks the relay, overload, thermostat and fans in that order.
- Same visit
Fix and restart
Relays, thermostats and fan motors often go in on the spot. We restart the unit and watch the compressor draw and the temperature start to fall before leaving.
- Next morning
Confirm zero degrees
Put a thermometer between packages overnight. A healthy freezer reads zero or colder by morning; if it doesn't, call us back so we can recheck.
Freezer repairs we handle most
Here is what we usually find inside a freezer that has stopped doing its job.
Start relay and overload
The relay helps the compressor start, and the overload shuts it off if it overheats. Both sit on the side of the compressor and often fail together, so we usually replace them as a pair.
Cold control thermostat
On most chest freezers a mechanical thermostat with a capillary tube decides when the compressor runs. When it sticks open, the freezer never starts; when it sticks closed, it runs forever and frosts up.
Condenser fan and coil
Some chest freezers have hot wall coils, others a fan-cooled condenser under a rear cover. We clean the coil, check the fan motor for free spin, and replace a fan whose bearings have seized.
Defrost system on uprights
Frost-free uprights use a defrost heater, a bimetal thermostat and a timer or board. We meter each part, find the open circuit, and melt out the evaporator so airflow returns.
Lid and door gaskets
A torn gasket lets in humid air that turns to frost. We replace the gasket, adjust lid hinges or the door so it seals evenly, and check that the lid switch turns off the light.
Sealed system checks
If everything electrical tests good and the freezer still won't get cold, we check for a refrigerant leak or a failing compressor. On older chest freezers, a pinhole leak in the wall tubing can't always be repaired.
Typical freezer repair costs in the Farmington area
These ranges cover parts and labor for common freezer repairs here. They are typical numbers, not a quote for your unit.
| Start relay and overload kit | $142-$238 |
|---|---|
| Cold control thermostat | $156-$287 |
| Condenser or evaporator fan motor | $171-$326 |
| Upright defrost heater, thermostat or timer | $193-$378 |
| Sealed system leak repair and recharge | $684-$1,237 |
The final price depends on the model, where the part sits, and whether it is on the shelf locally or has to ship. Older chest freezers sometimes need a universal part adapted to fit, which can add some labor.
How to keep a garage freezer running for years
- Give a chest freezer at least three inches of space on every side so its wall coils or condenser can shed heat during July and August.
- Plug the freezer straight into a wall outlet rather than a long extension cord, and avoid sharing the circuit with a compressor or welder.
- Defrost a manual chest freezer when the ice reaches a quarter inch. Thick ice insulates the cold plates and forces longer compressor runs.
- Keep a cheap freezer alarm or a thermometer inside so you spot a slow warm-up before the meat on top starts to soften.
- If a garage GFCI outlet trips during a monsoon storm, the freezer goes off silently. Check that outlet after every big storm night.
Is your freezer worth fixing?
A chest freezer with a bad relay, thermostat or fan is almost always worth fixing; these are low-cost parts on a simple machine. Uprights with defrost failures are usually worth it too, especially if the cabinet and door are in good shape. Replacement starts to win when the sealed system fails on a unit past its teens, or when wall tubing has rusted through. We'll tell you which situation you are in, and if it can't be saved we can still help you plan how to move the food fast.

Freezer Repair questions from Farmington homeowners
How long will meat stay frozen in a chest freezer that stopped working?
Federal food safety guidance says a packed chest freezer that stays shut keeps food frozen safely for roughly two days, while a half-empty one lasts about one. Ice crystals still in the center mean it can be refrozen. Keep the lid shut, call us, and line up coolers or a friend's freezer just in case.
Can a freezer stop working because the garage is too cold?
Yes. Many freezers are rated only down to about 50 or 55 degrees room temperature. Below that, the thermostat may sense cold and stop running the compressor. Check your manual for its minimum, and consider a garage-ready model or a warmer spot if your garage drops into the teens.
Why is my upright freezer full of frost?
Frost-free uprights melt their coil several times a day using a defrost heater. When that heater, its thermostat or the timer fails, frost builds until air can't move. We test each defrost part, replace the one that failed, and clear the ice so the freezer cools normally again.
Do you fix older chest freezers?
We do. Chest freezers are simple, and many older ones are worth keeping. Relays, thermostats and lid gaskets are still available or have universal replacements. The main exception is a refrigerant leak in tubing buried inside the walls, which usually ends the unit's life.
Should I unplug my freezer and plug it back in to reset it?
Wait at least five minutes before plugging it back in so refrigerant pressure can balance, or the compressor may trip again. If it still clicks, hums without cooling, or stays silent after that, don't keep cycling it. Call us so a failing relay doesn't damage the compressor.
Is a freezer that runs all the time broken?
Not always, but it is a warning. Constant running usually means dirty coils, a weak condenser fan, a leaking gasket, or a very hot garage. Left alone, it wears out the compressor and raises your power bill, so it's worth checking before summer.
